Philosophy
We all have jobs to do. So I can teach and you can learn, I have developed a classroom discipline plan. An off-task student hinders every student’s education. The rules, rewards, and consequences listed below will help us create a positive environment conducive to learning.
Rules
RULE #1: Follow directions the first time given.
RULE #2: One person speaks at a time.
A. If you have a question or comment, raise your hand to be addressed by me.
B. With group work, one person speaks at a time with in the group, in a whispering voice.
C. When I say “Choral Response,” the entire class may respond at once.
RULE #3: Only clear bottled water permitted. No other food/beverages permitted without teacher approval. Please maintain a clean environment around you. Gum chewing is permitted, as long as you avoid cracking it, blowing bubbles, and other distracting behavior.
RULE #4: No profanity or vulgarity. Use words appropriate for the classroom.
RULE #5: Be in your assigned seat by the time the bell stops ringing, with all necessary materials, and remain until dismissed by the teacher.
A. Throwing paper away, getting a Kleenex, or sharpening a pencil do not require teacher permission. Just do it!
B. If we are doing seat work quietly or have “free time,” you may just leave when the bell rings. “Until dismissed by the teacher” refers to when we are at a teacher-led instruction point when the teacher needs to say something crucial before you leave. Just sit quietly until I say what I need to say and then you can go.

Consequences
I record all misbehavior, even warnings. These are cumulative on a given day.
1st Time: Warning. I write it down, but no major consequence.
2nd Time: You will remain after class for a thirty-seconds detention. During this conference, we will discuss your behavior and class expectations. If you choose not to serve this detention, you will lose 5 points from your extra credit points.
3rd Time: I will contact your parent or guardian.
4th Time: You will be assigned a school detention.
5th Time: Go to the office on referral.
Severe Disruption or Inappropriate Behavior: Go to the office on referral.
(This includes—but is not limited to—arguing, blatantly ignoring a teacher’s instructions, showing disrespect for a teacher, throwing things, and destruction of school property.)

Technology Policy
We will endeavor to make full use of the iPads in our classroom, engaging in a variety of activities, but students may not get off task by veering onto other websites (such as checking sports scores or playing games). If off-task on the computer, you will earn a detention.
Students should not take photos/videos or record audio during the class period. If you feel you have a valid educational purpose, obtain prior permission from your teacher. Violations will merit office referral.
Because we do have access to iPads in the classroom, we do not usually need access to other devices. Cell phones should not be used without the teacher's permission; in fact, before class begins, students should place their cell phones in the caddy at the front of the room and retrieve phones once the day's lessons have ended. Students wishing to use a cell phone or other non-iPad devices must obtain prior approval from Ms. Haynam prior to using these devices. You may use your cell phone during the 5-minute passing time between classes.

Tardy Policy
If you are outside the classroom or just entering the classroom when the bell stops ringing, you are tardy. Keep in mind that tardiness earns a school detention. If you were detained by a teacher or administrator, obtain a pass from that person before entering the classroom. First period students should go to the office for a tardy slip to be admitted to class.
You should now have an idea of the system we all will need to follow in our English classroom. Feel free to ask me questions about anything on these pages. I truly believe that, if we all work together, this school year will be a great one!
