Late Work
Make Up Work Policy
According to the RHS Student Handbook, “It is the responsibility of absent students to obtain their make-up work. Students are permitted one day of make-up for every missed day. A day’s absence does not excuse a student from the responsibility of all previously announced assignments or tests on the day of their return.”
- Unless stated otherwise, assignments are due at the start of the class period. If your homework is late or incomplete, you will not receive full credit. As a general rule:
- Literature assignments cannot be made up once we start going over them in class in person or on video.
- Grammar assignments must be completed by the unit test due date; otherwise, they cannot be made up.
- Writing can be made up for reduced points. Submitted later in class period or school day = ½ letter grade off. Then each day late = 1 letter grade off.
- For the major papers (literary analysis, narrative, persuasive, research), students must submit their papers to Google Classroom by the start of class--even if they are absent. Each calendar day late is a letter grade off.
- By each Thursday, I will post the week’s assignments on the Haynam Nation website. Thus, all the week’s assignments are “previously announced,” so students are responsible for keeping up with the syllabus even when absent. If students need a copy of the handouts, they will likely find them at Google Classroom or by emailing their teacher.
- Exception: If circumstances prohibit your ability to keep up with the assignments, such as a death in the family, extreme illness, or hospitalization, I will work with you. Please supply a note from your parent/guardian requesting an extension.
- When there’s no way you could keep up with the syllabus from home, either because the assignment was not “previously announced” or because you could not have received a handout ahead of time, it is YOUR responsibility to learn about and make up all classwork within the number of days you are absent. Thus, if you are absent 3 days, you’ll have 3 days to make up all classwork when you return to school.
- TO FIND OUT WHAT YOU MISSED: From home, you will find the syllabus and assignment sheet at the Haynam Nation. Find additional resources at Google Classroom. Upon returning to school, see Ms. Haynam before class begins to receive any handouts not posted online (hopefully these are few or nonexistent!). If you have questions, ask other students and/or Ms. Haynam.
- TO TURN IN YOUR WORK: Submit it directly to your teacher or appropriate online site if required. It is YOUR responsibility to turn it in on time; I may NOT ask for it!
- TO MAKE UP TESTS & QUIZZES: Absent students will make up tests and quizzes upon their return to class. For online tests and quizzes, students may not take them from home because I will need to monitor the test-taker.
- If you are absent from class because of a field trip or some other school related business, including extracurriculars, you are still responsible for the work missed during your absence. Thus, if you are away on a field trip the day before a test, you still will have to take the test the next day of school. Advice: See me ahead of time about what you will miss.
- If you come to class (or school) late or leave early, you are still responsible for the work you missed.
- For instance, if you miss first period class but arrive second period, you must make a point to find your first period teacher and find out what you missed and what your homework is; likewise, if you are going home sick, see the teachers of classes you’ll miss—before you leave school.
- If you have an early dismissal pass to get of class before the end of the period, show your teacher the pass before class begins so that the two of you can touch base.
